The Air Quality Index, pictured below, is the primary tool used to communicate air quality conditions and forecasts to the public. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern. When levels of air pollution reach the orange level, it constitutes an “Air Action Day”. Air Action Days can mean different things for different people. In general, it’s better to avoid heavy outdoor exertion on these days for any member of the population; however, people in sensitive groups (such as those with asthma, children, and the elderly) may want to limit their outdoor exposure altogether.
